The Great Ship

Imagine a vessel larger than worlds, ancient beyond human understanding, traveling through the galaxy with millions of passengers and countless mysteries hidden within it.

Welcome to the Great Ship

A universe that kept
getting larger.

This is Robert Reed's Great Ship—one of the most fascinating fictional settings I've encountered in science fiction.

I first discovered the Great Ship through Marrow. What began as an encounter with a single novel eventually became something much larger. The more I read, the more I discovered: novels, novellas and short stories scattered across decades of magazines, collections and individual publications, revealing different corners of this enormous vessel and the people and creatures who inhabit it.

And I kept wanting to know more.

This part of Larry's Legendary Library is my attempt to explore that remarkable universe—to follow its stories, investigate its chronology and publication history, collect its terminology and characters, and reflect on the ideas and mysteries Robert Reed has hidden throughout it.

You don't need to know everything before you come aboard.

Welcome to the Great Ship. Let's explore the deeper wonder.

Two inviting doorways into an enormous universe.

I want the novel

Marrow

If you're ready for a novel, this is where I'd begin.

Marrow was my own introduction to the Great Ship, and it remains an excellent doorway into Reed's enormous universe. It introduces the Ship, some of its central characters, and mysteries that reach deep into its history.

You don't need any previous knowledge of the Great Ship before reading it.

Give me a shorter taste

Marrow Redux

If you'd rather begin with something shorter, try Marrow Redux.

It offers another way into the Great Ship without asking you to commit to a full novel immediately. If Reed's enormous vessel, immortal characters and layered mysteries capture your imagination, there's an entire universe waiting beyond it.

Don't Worry About
Reading Order

There is a chronology to the Great Ship stories, but it isn't a series that needs to be read sequentially. Many of the stories stand on their own, illuminate different periods in the Ship's immense history, and can be discovered in different orders.

That's part of the fun.
